According to Workforce, “31 percent of employees are unengaged, meaning they are not providing positive customer experiences and are halfway out the door.” Employees that have poor leadership and lack of motivation are the nose prints on the inside of the glass trying to leave your organization. These are the people who are seeking alternative opportunities because they are not happy with their current status. Employees with proper leadership and motivation are the nose prints on the outside of the glass. These are the people who are seeking opportunities within your organization because you have intrinsic motivators to offer.

Motivation and retention go hand in hand. By focusing on motivating your employees and providing them with effective leadership, not only will they perform better, but you are more likely to retain these high performing employees. You want to retain your dedicated employees and attract the employees on the outside of the glass!

It doesn’t take much effort, so motivate your employees by giving them what they want:

  1. Pride in their organization and a sense of belonging.  Inclusion in the company’s organizational culture is crucial for high performance. Employees that feel like they “belong” are more likely to be invested in their work and committed to their employer.
  2. Ability to show mastery of their craft. One of the best feelings in the world is accomplishment. Employees will continually perform at a high level if they are proud of their work and it is recognized by others.
  3. Trust and autonomy to show what they can do. Leaders have a tendency to tell employees how to do their job, when micromanagement is the leading cause of disengagement and discontent. Effective leadership is offering structure, but allowing people to think independently. Doing so allows employees to feel trusted and empowered to do their best.
