man filling out an application formSo your company is hiring. That’s fantastic news for everyone in this economy! You’re going to hire a few people who really need the job and inject much needed cash into the economy. However, before we even get that far, you have to write the job description. Much like some folks dislike writing resumes, for some HR members, writing a job description is the bane of their existence. How do you write something that is specific enough to get the right candidates to apply, without narrowing the field too much?

Describe the company. It’s a good thing for your applicants to know a little bit about your company before they send off their resume. Give them a paragraph introduction to your company. If they’re truly interested, they’ll do some research and find out more.

Describe the position. This is a bit of a no-brainer, but it pays to be specific on the description. Be clear on the years of experience desired and the duties and tasks that the candidate would be responsible for in their new position. They should know what they’re getting into before they apply and you will find applicants that are truly eligible for the position.

Describe the candidate. Give job seekers an idea of the type of person you’re looking for to fill the position. Not simply credentials, but personality traits that are important for the position and as a culture fit for the company. This is a good way to weed out unsuitable candidates.

Despite your best efforts on the job description, you will likely be inundated with resumes, but hopefully a good description will give you a better, more qualified selection.
