Here are this week’s links to a few good stories that we found and selected because we feel they might add valuable insights and perspectives for small to medium size businesses.
- The holiday season got off to its latest start possible, with Thanksgiving arriving on November 28. This means that the window of time for business owners to thank their employees is as small as it can be. As such, I thought Minda Zetlin’s article for Time Magazine entitled 10 Creative Ways to Thank Employees This Holiday Season was timely and very good. I saw several suggestions that we have implemented, and yes they were all well received. The one that didn’t fit was to “Lend out your ride”, which presumes that I drive a fancy car. I never saw the desire or need for that, but serving lunch was always well received, and I was never shy about donning an apron.
- It’s no secret that implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has encountered more than a few challenges and delays recently. The latest involves the delay in the ability for small businesses to purchase insurance through the federal website. Sarah Kliff, writing for the Washington Post relates the details in Obamacare’s online SHOP enrollment delayed by one year. For Massachusetts business owners, it is important to know that this decision does not affect business owners in 14 states that have implemented their own exchanges. And yes, Massachusetts is one of those states. For a list of what all states are doing, see State status of ACA implementation.
- Finally, Todd Nordstrom, writing for TLNT writes an article that hit home for me – Mining the Wisdom of Your Senior Workers – Before It’s Too Late. Yes, I am a baby boomer who is a member of the senior class. And while I may have some wisdom to impart, I am consistently amazed at what I continue to learn from those from generations X & Y, as well as well as the “millennials”. Clearly, the workplace has changed. Those of every generation who understand that we all have much to learn from each other will benefit. Indeed, it is a dynamic and exciting time in the workplace for those with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
