Here are this week’s links to a few good stories that we found and selected because we feel they might add valuable insights and perspectives for small to medium size businesses.
• As 2014 winds down, perhaps it is time to start thinking about potential New Year’s resolutions for the business owner. Alexandra Levit, writing for American Express Open Forum has some great ideas in Tactics for Reinvigorating a Stale Culture. She offers great advice, but one leaped off the screen for me: Institutionalize Intrapreneurship: “Intrapreneurship is the practice of entrepreneurship within the context of an established organization, by leveraging the resources of that organization. Intrapreneurship sounds great on paper, but if you leave it to chance, it will lose out to everyday business fires every time. If your culture is getting stale, consider building intrapreneurial projects into employee performance objectives and setting aside time each week for employees to pursue innovative personal projects that will take your business to the next level. Decide on the projects that will receive significant organizational resources by establishing a formal innovation committee to vet ideas.” Read the entire article to learn more. It is definitely worth a look.
• Colan Lee, writing for Time Small Business, offers some simple steps for business leaders to follow. The advice is clear, concise and would fit nicely on a wall poster. Read 12 Ways to Get Pretty Much Anything You Want to learn more.
• Oftentimes in this space we speak to the importance of letting employees know they are appreciated. Traci Pesch, writing for TLNT offers a nice replay of the same old theme with one exception in What Have You Done to Show Your Employees How Much You Care? The exception is a video that shows an exceptional effort by the Lowell, Michigan Police Department. It is nice to see law enforcement “paying it forward” and it should inspire business owners to do the same thing. Happy Holidays!
