What management style is right for your business?
Melanie Graysmith’s interesting article explores this question in her article of the same name. She identifies five styles that might apply:
- Active
- Autocratic
- Democratic
- Participatory
- Servant
After owning and operating a small business for more than 30 years, I have to admit that the style I employed probably involved a piece of all of them with the exception of “Autocratic.” If you have a company with employees who require close supervision, it may work for you. But if you want to grow and prosper, it takes a generous share of creative employees to get you there. The reality is that autocrats and creative thinkers are a bad mix.
