Here are this week’s links to a few good stories that we found and selected because we feel they might add valuable insights and perspectives for small to medium size businesses.
- Annie Pilon writing for Small Business Trends produces a list of 50 Time Saving Tips for Small Businesses. A list of 50 might seem to be on the high side, but I found myself identifying with more of the advice listed than I thought when I first saw the title. Personally, I liked #19 which suggests “If something doesn’t have a big impact on your business, don’t stress about it. Perfectionism can be a big time waster.” And while #29 should be obvious (Automate Payroll), I would suggest taking it a step further to include outsourcing the Human Resources department.
- An interesting article written by Heather Huhman for Mashable speaks to the responsibilities often given to Social Media interns. In Why Social Media Internships Should Never Be Unpaid, an expansive list of responsibilities often assigned to interns is contemplated. Additionally, I would offer that by simply calling someone an “intern” does not mean that the business can elect not to issue a paycheck. Not paying an intern who actually performs as an employee may be inappropriate, as well as illegal.
- Lastly, In a June 26 blog post on Employers Rx, a case is made for Human Resource Outsourcing firms, benefits administration/health insurance enrollment specialists, and Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs) citing their ability to help small businesses navigate the complexities of the Affordable Care Act.
