Here are this week’s links to a few good stories that we found and selected because we feel they might add valuable insights and perspectives for small to medium size businesses.

  • Could anxiety over getting fired be considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?  It is according to a recent federal court decision (Huiner v. Arlington School). TLNT – The Business of HR, in October 4, 2013 post by Eric Meyer, details the story of a South Dakota school teacher who was diagnosed with “anxiety and depression, likely stemming from her concerns about possible getting fired.”  The findings in this case could have a profound impact on future court decisions.  Read Court:  Anxiety Over Possibly Getting Fired Is a Disability Under the ADA to get the full story.
  • Understanding your employees can help you achieve better results, says Geil Browning in an article written for Inc. Magazine.  The advice is short, sweet, to the point and worth a look.  Read 10 Ways to Motivate Anyone to learn more.
  • Lauren Simonds, writing for Time Business & Money, speaks to the need to develop a “smooth-running, well-coordinated business team” that can “set you up for long-term growth and success.”  In The Team Behind Your Success, she lauds that axiom that suggests that you work on your business, not in it.  I have had the privilege of living that advice and couldn’t agree more.  It has worked at Genesis for almost 23 years.
