Here are this week’s links to a few good stories that we found and selected because we feel they might add valuable insights and perspectives for small to medium size businesses.

• The discussion of the Affordable Care Act has taken a secondary role in the mid-term elections, and for the most part seems to be lost in the maelstrom of political attack ads. Which begs the question Is the Affordable Care Act Working? Margot Sanger-Katz, writing for the New York Times does a summary of seven questions that many people are asking. The results might surprise you.

• Meetings are often necessary, but as John Kenneth Galbraith once said “Meetings are indispensable when you don’t want to do anything.” That’s how Laura Stack, writing for TLNT speaks to the subject of meetings in 8 Ways to Help Make Your Office Meetings More Tolerable. All eight make great sense, but for me the two that stand out are #8 “Schedule breaks for long meetings” and most importantly #1 “Decide whether the meeting is even necessary”. If you get past step one, then it makes sense to consider two through eight.

• Lastly, The Small Business Administration (SBA) and the National Women’s Business Council announced last week that the organizations are partnering to increase the flow of capital into small businesses run by women. Hilary Burns, Bizwomen Reporter opens her article SBA and NWBC partner to grow capital for women-run small businesses with this announcement and goes on to explain the details. As we are a company that is run by two talented and highly experienced women, we contend that it is about time!
